Friday morning saw us facing a rematch against the Hong-Kong based FGDO for the 27th & 28th positions. As we had started the week as 27th seeds we had a lot to play for… The game was incredibly close, Ltd didn’t have the lead until the final points, with the last pass from Stew to Katie giving us a 16-14 victory! A great way to finish our participation in the tournament, now the team will settle down to watch the finals…
Last night saw Ltd Release go to the famous Trade night, where team kit is swaped with other teams. Some hot trades were had…as were some rubbish trades. The highlight of the evening was the Skunks Roadkill shirts being so popular we managed to trade about 7 of them!!!
Anna & Caroline had forgotten to bring any trading kit, and so they were set the captains’s challenge of seeing how much free stuff they could get by the end of the night. Nobody knows how, but within 5 minutes Anna already had a free brand new Gaia shirt, and by the end of the night she had managed to get a large amount of team gear…including team boxer shorts!! Anna was the clear winner….she refuses to tell us how she did it…but we did hear a few rumours.
Back to the hotel, and as the team was just settling into some fine Ausralian food the fire alarms started buzzing. We all assembled at the hotel’s car park, only to find Captain Will running to reception to apologise profusely for clearing out the hotel….he had burned his sausages…
So…two more games today. Yet again a 6:30 am bus to get to the fields in time for warm-up. In our first game we played Drunk Dogs from Japan, a short, speedy loud team. Thier warm-up routine was amazing!!!…I now understand why the Japanese invented the dance-mats for computer consoles!
The game was very even and the team played well. Unfortunaltey we have picked up a number of injuries and so there has now been some shifting in team positions. This shifting seems to have worked and we are still playing some world class untimate. Unfortunately we lost the game 17-12. This meant we were now fighting for 25th place in the 25 - 28 bracket. This would still beat our original seeding by 2 spots.
Our next game to get into the 25 vs 26 final saw us face off agaist flycatchers from Australia. It was pretty windy and they played zone the whole game…which we like. They took the first upwind point to get a break, but we soon got it back and kept trading points. They eventually took the half 9-7.
This was the longest 1st half we have played yet. The time cap kicked in only 5 minutes into the 2nd half.
We knew we could beat this team and went out strong in the second half, unfortunately with the time cap in play, the game was to 13 and we didn’t manage to catch up, loosing 13-9.
We are now in the 27th vs 28th final to keep our original seeding of 27th.
Two more games today, yet again a 6am start for the 8.30 match… Looks like we’ll end up with the early game every day this week! Still, at least it’s not too hot then.
The last game in the pool was for bragging rights only, we are still in with a shot of finishing in the top 20 which would be fantastic. Meanwhile Leeds are still in the main draw in our division, and Clapham are into the final stages of the men’s division. Find out more results using the links on the right.
We’ve moved into the second pool stage, while we now can’t finish higher than 17th there’s still plenty to play for. Another scorcher, we started well early this morning but wilted a little in the midday sun…
And we’ve finally m,anaged to add some photos to the Gallery. There’s some from the opening ceremony there, hopefully more to come over the next 24 hours.
As the others have said things didn’t go our way in the sun today - but we still have a great chance at beating our seeding and finishing well up among the other European nations. We’re having a few problems uploading photos, we hope to get this sorted tomorrow. In the meantime you can follow the links on the right to Scoreomatic to see a few photos of our first game, and to the WUCC site for much more…
Results so far:
Pool 1: Ltd Release 3 - 17 Brass Monkey (San Francisco)
Pool 1: Ltd Release 17 - 8 Eureka Goldigaz (Ballarat, South Australia)
Pool 1: Ltd Release 6 - 17 Woodies (Bavaria)
Well another day has been and gone in sunny Perth. The weather today was absolutley scorching but Ltd Release came out ready to play the final two pool games. The first game was agaisnt Gold Diggerz from Australia. It took us a while to get into as the Aussies went 4-1 up. However Ltd soon picked up and with some awesome D and fluid O took the game 17-8.
It was then time to sit in the much needed shade until our lunchtime game agaisnt the German team Woodys. We knew this would be a tough match as they were an incrediable experienced team. Both teams were also fighting hard as the winner of this game would be gaurunteed finish in the top 24. As i was rested for this game i got a good view of all the action. It was very tight to begin with and the first few points were long ones. However with a few simple errors Ltd lost a bit of focus and Woodys took the half. They pulled ahead further after the break and Ltd called a much needed time out to get their heads back in the game. It seemed to work as we scored two quick points. However it was too little too late and sadly Woodys took the game.
Ltd will now be put into a new pool of 5 teams and we will be playing all 4 teams in this pool over the next 2 days. Lets hope we can make them victorious days. The team is playing well with some awesome D we just need to complete the O. But so far Ltd are Living The Dream in Perth and ahving a great time.
After some trouble with the tournament transport, the team made it to the pitches with over 1 hour for warmup. The drills were done to a very high standard, and were kept short as regular breaks were needed due to the high heat. Luckily each team has a pitch-side tent, so there was plenty of shade available to try to cool down.
4 players were rested for this game, meaning we had a 20 man team. We played a very good game, our Defence was on top form, forcing the opposition to make many mistakes. Unfortunately our Offence wasn’t quite as good as our Defence and we lacked good finishes. Our moving of the disc down the field was second to none, but Brass Monkey’s big D prevented us from scoring. Brass Monkey are a massive defense team with very strong forces. They marked us under and didn’t let the breakthrows go. They were also very good in the air, coming down with the majority of high discs.
As predicted, the game was a long huck affair, this style being used a lot more by the American team than by us. Brass monkeys caught onto the fact we liked our under cuts and so made it very difficult for us to get the breaks. The game finished 16-4 to Brass monkeys, however Ltd played a very high standard game, and everyone was very happy witht their individual performance and the overall team performance.
This was a great game to play before the other 2 crucial games in our pool. These are against Woodies from Germany and Gold Diggers from Australia. If we win both of these games tomorrow we will have a guaranteed top 24 finish and a good shot at the top 16.
After the game the team chilled out at the hotel pool with some layout practice into the pool. An early night is on call tonight as the team is geting the 6:30 bus to the fields for what should be another great day of ultimate. We had fun.
1 game gone, 1 loss, but a very positive and high performing team. Everyone is psyched for tomorrow’s games already. At europeans in 2005 we lost our first pool game to UFO who eventually came second in the tournament, but we then went on to win all our games & made it to the semi finals. Let’s hope the same thing happens here.
So the tournament has now begun. We had a 2 hour training session this morning in the city next to the tallest musical instrument in Australia!!….a bell tower…
The training session was good, everyone put in 100% effort and the team spirit was great. It’s a great start to the tournament.
We have just watched the opening ceremony with an aboriganal group followed by the ‘vegemite dancers’. The weather has been pretty hot with some scattered showers.
Everyone is now at the tournament centre enjoying the opening game in the mixed Division bewtween Team Fisher Price from Canada and Sublime from Perth, Australia. The first half was of a very high standard, meaning we have some serious competition out here.
Tomorrow sees our first game of the tournament against Brass Monkey from the US. These guys are 7th seeds and top of our pool. It should be a very high standard game with many long hucks as it’s pretty windy out here.
Tonight we’re off to our first team meal & then an early night to make sure we’re ready to go out guns blazing tomorrow at 1:30. The team can’t wait.
